Understanding your Student Loan using the National Student Loan Database

Having qualified for a federal student loan, what you need is to get as much information as possible about your loan for you to understand the ways by which you can fully maximize it and repay it in the shortest time possible.

The National Student Loan Database or NSLDS enables students to fulfill such tasks. This database was created for the Department of Education to provide aid to students in understanding their student loans and general financial situation.

Students may access the database by logging in to the NSLDS website. On the website, you may inquire about your loan or scholarship data and get comprehensive reviews using a systematically compiled data forwarded by schools and other loan programs. The NSLDS provides detailed information on all types of federal student loans including the name of the loan guarantor and schools that offers specific loans. Because you are given accurate data on your loan, any repayment issue that might come about in the future can easily be resolved using the NSLDS information.

For those concerned about their account security and privacy, the NSLDS is actually allowed legal right to ask for private information such as a student’s Social Security number as part of the Department of Education’s effort to protect your account against unauthorized individuals who might want to gain access to your financial information. To secure all the students’ information stored in the NSLDS, a program called Secure Socket Layers is used to encrypt information, rendering it impossible for hackers or any other infiltrators to intercept the transfer of information.

To create an account in the National Student Loan Database, you need to provide your Social Security number, birth date, Department of Education PIN, and your last name’s first two letters. To get your PIN, you may visit the website for more information.

Every time you log in, your account status will be defined using a roster of student codes, an example of which is CA for ‘canceled’. Inaccurate information posted in the NSLDS may be reported to the concerned parties such as your school, loan guarantor or direct loan provider. It may take a maximum of a month to make the necessary changes to your account information.
